When students whose first language is not English apply to BIS Abu Dhabi, the admissions team assesses their English proficiency to determine if additional EAL support is needed. This ensures they can confidently access mainstream subjects like mathematics, science, and humanities.

At BIS Abu Dhabi, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every student can thrive academically and socially as their English improves. Our Supported EAL Learner (SEALL) Pathway runs from KS1 to KS3, with access to the English B course after Year 9.

What is the SEALL Pathway?

The SEALL Pathway is a tailored programme for students new to English or still developing proficiency. It provides targeted, student-centred support until they can independently follow the curriculum. Support may include:

Accelerated Beginner’s Course (ABC)

In-class assistance from experienced staff

Withdrawal lessons with EAL teachers or support staff

Interactive language learning resources

Specialist co-curricular activities

All support plans are flexible and evolve as students’ language skills develop. Families receive regular updates, stay connected with a designated EAL key worker, and receive termly progress plans.

Entry to the SEALL Pathway

Applicants suspected of needing EAL support complete a language assessment to determine their proficiency. Based on this, an individual support plan is developed by the EAL department with input from the class teachers, ensuring clear and collaborative support.

Duration of Support

Time on the SEALL Pathway varies based on each student’s background and progress – targets (EAL Plan) are reviewed at the end of each term. Typically, support lasts one to two years, aiming for full independent access to the school curriculum in English.

Scheduling and Communication

EAL support occurs during the school day, keeping students integrated with their peers. Families receive monthly communication letters, termly EAL plans, and progress reports, with the EAL team available for ongoing communication and support.

Withdrawal Sessions

If withdrawal (W) lessons are part of the plan, students are withdrawn during Modern Foreign languages (MFL) classes e.g. French - PSME, Library and Islamic Studies (for non-Muslims), or Guided Reading, depending on agreed arrangements. Beginner students may initially be withdrawn from English lessons as part of intensive support.

Cost

The SEALL Pathway costs AED 6,000 per term, covering assessments, planning, lesson support, teacher consultations, and progress reviews.

Commitment and Progress

Acceptance into the SEALL Pathway means a student requires additional language support to comfortably and successfully excel in the mainstream classroom. The academic team customizes the mix of support, balancing in-class help, withdrawal sessions, and resources. Progress is monitored regularly, with plans adapted accordingly. Families remain informed throughout the journey.
