How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Day of Nursery

Student
Starting nursery is a big milestone for children and parents alike. At the British International School of Washington (BISW), we understand that the first day of nursery sets the foundation for a child’s love of learning, confidence, and sense of belonging. With the right preparation, this transition can be a positive and exciting experience for your child.
One of the most important steps is building familiarity. Talk to your child about nursery in a calm, positive way, explaining what their day might look like—playing, learning, making friends, and meeting caring teachers. Visiting the campus beforehand or sharing photos of the classroom can help your child feel more comfortable and confident in their new environment.

Establishing a consistent routine ahead of time also makes a big difference. Gradually aligning bedtime, morning routines, and mealtimes with the school day helps children feel secure and prepared. At BISW, our nurturing Early Years programme is designed to support children at their own pace, allowing them to settle in naturally and feel safe from day one.

Encouraging independence is another key part of preparation. Simple skills such as putting on shoes, tidying up toys, or expressing basic needs help children feel capable and confident as they begin nursery. Our personalized approach ensures that each child’s individual needs are supported, while gentle guidance fosters independence and curiosity.
Most importantly, trust the process. BISW’s experienced Early Years educators work closely with families to create a warm, welcoming environment where children feel valued and supported. By partnering with parents and focusing on each child’s well‑being, we help turn first days into joyful beginnings.

At BISW, your child’s nursery journey starts with care, confidence, and a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
