Exploring Knowledge in a Changing World BISW Students Shine at the Year 12 TOK Exhibition

At The British International School of Washington (BISW), we are committed to nurturing inquisitive, reflective, and globally minded learners. This commitment was beautifully demonstrated during our annual Year 12 Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Exhibition, a key component of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.

The TOK Exhibition provides students with a unique opportunity to explore one of the programme’s most fundamental questions: How do we know what we know? Through carefully selected objects and thoughtful analysis, students examine how knowledge is created, interpreted, and shared across different disciplines, communities, and real-world contexts.

In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, evolving perspectives, and an abundance of information, the ability to think critically about knowledge has never been more important. The exhibition challenges students to engage with complex ideas, question assumptions, and reflect on the ways knowledge shapes our understanding of the world around us.

Throughout the evening, our Year 12 students presented their exhibitions with confidence, maturity, and intellectual curiosity. Their work highlighted a wide range of perspectives and demonstrated the depth of thinking that characterises the IB learner profile. Visitors were encouraged to engage in meaningful discussions, reflecting on the diverse ways knowledge is experienced and understood.

The event was further enriched by contributions from three guest speakers who shared valuable insights from their own disciplines and lived experiences. We were delighted to welcome Ms Pell, alongside Nika, a BISW Class of 2025 graduate, who each explored how knowledge is produced, evaluated, and applied within their respective fields. Their thoughtful reflections added another dimension to the evening and provided students with meaningful real-world connections to their learning.

It was a genuine pleasure to listen to such insightful contributions and to witness the enthusiasm, curiosity, and analytical thinking demonstrated by our students throughout the event. The exhibition not only celebrated academic achievement but also highlighted the importance of reflection, open-mindedness, and lifelong learning.
