Recently, students from the British School of Nanjing took part in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Challenge Competition aimed at students in Year 12 and 13. The Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple-choice competition aimed at students across the UK.

It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

Of the 10 participants we achieved 3 golds, 3 silvers and 2 bronze awards. Alongside this, we had three students qualify for the Senior Kangaroo (only 1000 students are allowed to partake in this in UK). As well as one student qualifying for BMO1 – the first round of the British Mathematical Olympiad. Our youngest student was in Y8 and she achieved Silver.

Congratulations to our winners:

Jackson - Best in school and BMO1 qualifier

Gahyun and Tim -Best in Year 12

Elena - Silver, Best in Year and only in Y8!!!

In the coming school year we have plenty of mathematical competitions taking place:
UKMT Intermediate Challenge (Years 11 and below)
UKMT Junior Challenge (Years 9 and below)

Alongside maths and computing competitions we regularly take part in at the University of Waterloo.
