The pumpkin is a classic symbol of autumn. Pumpkin trails are full of people searching for their perfect pumpkin so that they can make either scary Jack-o-lantern or a delicious pumpkin pie.
Whether you prefer carving or eating your pumpkin, all pumpkins grow from seeds.
Last spring the children planted pumpkin seeds in reach soil in our Forest school and the last few weeks we could observe their growth. We also had a chance to look inside a pumpkin. What’s inside a Pumpkin? Nursery children made a book about it.
Exploring is fun and if you would like you could bake a pumpkin pie with your child at home!

Mrs. Brown's Pumpkin Pie
1 cup stewed pumpkin*
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg (small one OK)
1/3 to 1/2 tsp. salt
1 rounded tsp. flour
1 tsp. ginger (level)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 cups milk
Mix sugar and egg together, add pumpkin and dry ingredients. Then add the milk. Taste to see if there is enough salt and spice. Bake until firm in the centre.
*If you use canned pumpkin, boil it down until it is a rich, dark colour - stir frequently. Use an iron frying pan.
