Awesome Aztecs...

13 February 2015

Having researched Aztec gods we learn more about Tlaloc, the god of rain.  We looked at pictures of different representations, we practiced drawing him.  Then we made a template which we used to help make our clay model.  We used different tools to create different shapes, patterns, lines and textures, and all had lots of fun!

Year 3 have continued their learning about chocolate by exploring the ancient Aztecs.  The Aztecs were the first civilisation to discover the cacao bean, making it into a chocolate drink.  This week we have learnt about Cortez, a Spaniard, who went to Mexico in the pursuit of gold and glory.  He invaded and conquered the country, discovering that the Aztecs used the cacao bean as a form of currency. Cortez was originally welcomed by the Aztecs because they thought he was the god Quetzalcoatl returning to the city.  Cortez took the bean back to Spain and the use of chocolate was developed and spread across Europe.  We watched a video and then drew and wrote about his life.

this is a nice video which could be clicked on to support the childnre's learning.
