Global Classroom News

06 March 2015

The competition element of the Big Challenge is drawing to its conclusion with our video and written submissions being sent this week. However our commitment to raising awareness of the UNCRC and to our project at Kramare continues.

In a slight change to our previously published information we would like to inform you that our Make It Right Exhibition will take place at Eurovea on Sunday March 15th, starting at 11:00. The exhibition will present a selection of work from our students across Early Years, Primary and Secondary on the Rights of the Child. We will also be using the exhibition as an opportunity to screen for the first time the short film being made by some of our IB CAS students on our fundraising project for the Orthopedic Ward at the Children’s University Teaching Hospital Kramare.

To date we have raised an amazing 6,600 euros. Before half term we held our sponsored run and our CAS organised Into The Night Sleepover. Between them they have so far raised over 3,000 euro! Both of these events were planned and organised by students, which makes them even more special. Hundreds of children from across Primary and Secondary took part running with staff and supported by members of the US Marine Corps from the US Embassy. We would like to extend our great thanks and gratitude to the US Marines for being so supportive of our fundraising efforts and being such a terrific source of encouragement and motivation to our students on the day of the run.

Nursery and Reception children created organised their own fund raising efforts in support of Kramare. The children produced art work which they framed and priced before holding an exhibition and selling the art work to their parents. As the children decided on the value of their work themselves we had some wide variations in price, with some children opting for very high valuations! The children generated several hundred euros for charity with their hard work. Again we thank our parents for coming along, viewing the art work, encouraging our young artists and supporting our fund raising.

Secondary students are able to purchase our unique Global Classroom t-shirts every Wednesday-Friday in school for the bargain price of 10 euro. All profits generated go towards our Kramare project. They are allowed to wear these t-shirts every Friday for the rest of the school year instead of the normal shirt and tie.

Secondary students took part in a Day of Rights on Wednesday 4th March, with each year group being involved in a carefully planned day of events to enhance their understanding of the Rights of the Child and the work of organisations such as the UN in supporting Children’s Rights. The highlight for many of our students was the opportunity to participate in our own mini Model United Nations, supported by a team of Year 12 students who have previously attended BratMUN. The role of Secretary General was taken on by Alex Tham, who has previously been awarded a prize for Most Distinguished Delegate at BratMUN.

We are hugely excited to be launching our Global Orchestra which will meet in New York later this year! This is a wonderful experience for our young musicians. Auditions are currently being organised by our Music Department. This is available to Secondary students only.

As part of our commitment to ensuring students learn both inside the classroom and through real world challenges, a team of secondary students are currently enjoying the final days of their exhibition to Tanzania. We look forward to sharing their films and photographs with you when they return.

Results from Round 2 of the Debate League are now in. We are pleased to share the continuing success of many of our teams in both Primary and Secondary schools. In Primary, Bratislava Bosses and Bratislava Brilliants both won close fought matches. In Secondary, Bratislava 1, Bratislava 2, Bratislava 3, Bratislava 5, King Khaled’s Minions and Formidable Ladies all won their matches. In addition Bratislava Winners were recognized as the Most Improved Team.

Year 9 students from 9C recently spent time with Year 3 to introduce them to the concept of the Global Classroom Creative Writing Competition, which they will be eligible to participate in next academic year. Each year 9 student worked with a group of Year 3 children to help them produce a piece of descriptive writing on ‘Somewhere Unforgettable’. The finished work will shortly be published on the Global Classroom ‘Celebrating Success’ area. Year 9 all commented on how much they enjoyed the experience of working with younger children and were genuinely very impressed with the wide ranging vocabulary the year 3 children used.

The annual Open Mic (Secondary) competition for our singers and musicians has also opened. Students can upload a recording of their performance to the Global Classroom. Winning entries will be available in a compilation album later this year. You can listen to last year’s winners on the Global Classroom. Closing date is April 17th.

Year 11students can also check out the Revision area on the Global Classroom as they prepare for their IGCSE exams.

Book Day has been celebrated across our 35 Schools. Students can upload their images of being ‘Caught Reading’ to the Global Classroom Padlet.
