International Award Silver Practice Adventurous Journey - Puchberg am Schneeberg

25 June 2015

It could have been another great International Award trip - but it wasn't. It was perfect! We did not have perfect students nor perfect staff, perfect skills nor perfect weather or perfect equipment... Students got lost, got blisters and wet, staff got annoyed at times, tired and lacking sleep due cold in the nights and the fact they have lent their warm layers to students who were cold too. We had rain every day, cold wind making it even more unpleasant, testing the pegs, poles and guy ropes of each tent and the skills of the builders.

But above all these imperfections there was a shared common brotherhood of hikers, which was created by helping the slower and weaker ones to keep going, keeping the positive spirit of the group, sharing out the weight to lessen the burden of the backpack, making hot tea or oatmeal for those still in tents asleep or those who were caught in the rain before they could reach the campsite, so by the time they get up or get there they will warm up.

Not everyone was ready to be the one supporting the others, not everyone has reached the maturity of putting others before themselves, serving others. Some are still the center of their own universe expecting others to serve them, cheer them up instead of being the one who serves or the ones who will cheer up. But we all mature at a different pace and students giving each other this positive example, an opportunity for everyone to grow in their humanity is what made this trip perfect.

I would like to thank all the staff, namely Mr England, Mr Euell, Miss Ponechalova and Mr Walker to help me run this trip and enable this magic to happen. And also all the students who were there for such a great experience for all of us.
