Walking around the school this afternoon during our Enrichment time, it was warming to see so much student and teacher activity going on. Laughter was part of the mix and everyone was seriously engaged in whatever it was that was going on, and having fun at the same time too!
It is October, and that means we are closing in on the half term break and the first student reports of the year and parent drop-ins. This year we are using a different format for parent conferences to try to be fair to everyone. The conferences at the end of October are for parents with children in Year 7, Year 10 and Year 12 only, and will be available on a first come first served basis through a new online booking system that we hope will be available to parents by next week. The booking system will be available through CHQ and you will be able to access this through a new Firefly parent portal that we hope to launch very soon. Watch out for information about your Firefly access and the parent drop-in sign-up heading your way soon. We look forward to welcoming the parents of Years 7, 10 and 12 to the parent drop-in at the end of the month.
In November, the parent drop-in will be for parents of students in Year 9, 11 and 13. You can find the schedule of parent drop-ins for the year in the Secondary Parent Handbook, which you can download from the Parents' Essentials page of the school website. Parent drop-ins are also listed in the school online calendar and in the BISB App.
On September 28th we held our first ever Open Evening for parents. This was a chance for parents to come and find out about the Secondary school, and to give them a chance to meet with the form tutors of their children. There was also an opportunity to talk with subject teachers, to learn a little more about the curriculum and to have a chance to meet with new parents and make connections. Turnout was moderately good, and we hopefully helped those that were here to understand what we do at BISB that makes us special in Bratislava.
At the Open Evening, I took the opportunity to advise parents that a lot of the information they often asked for was available online through the school website. As well as the Secondary Parent Handbook, we also have three curriculum guides that provide an overview of the three main curriculum areas in the school; the Key Stage 3 guide (Years 7-9), the IGCSE guide (Years 10-11), and the IB Diploma Guide (Years 12-13).
Each of these guides provides a comprehensive overview of the curriculum in each of the three main curriculum areas of the school. They are available for download from our Secondary Curriculum page on the school website.
If you still feel that you need more detailed curriculum information, then please talk with your child’s subject teacher.
Finally, I would like to welcome Mr. Warmington back to school. He has been recuperating at home for several weeks after a lengthy stay in hospital. I am pleased to say that Mr. Warmington is now well enough to return to his duties on a reduced timetable in the Mathematics department, and he has resumed teaching his classes in Years 9, 10 and 11. At the beginning of November after half term, we hope that Mr. Warmington will able to start teaching his Year 13 students again and before the end of November, his Year 7 and 8 classes also. Thank you for your patience during Mr. Warrington’s absence. It is a welcome sight to see him back in his classroom again.
