Early language development is essential for children’s future learning and school readiness.
Talk matters! We need it to communicate with each other and to explore and express our needs, hopes and desires throughout life. Therefore, opportunities for children to talk are an important of their early years.
In school, talk during child-initiated activities helps children to absorb new vocabulary and language easily because there is a link between what they are doing and what is being said. A self-chosen activity is also more engaging and motivating for the child and consequently more productive so it is our practice at BISB for all Early Years practitioners to take every opportunity to engage our children in talk during periods of child-initiated learning.
