Juilliard Dance Challenge

Wednesday 14th February was a big Global Campus day at BISB! Several hundred of our Primary and Secondary students came out onto the playground to perform a massed flash mob dance specially choreographed for us by The Juilliard School.  At the start of the next school year (September 2018) we will be launching our new dance curriculum, part of our ongoing performing arts program in partnership with Juilliard, the world’s leading performing arts school.

Wednesday’s flash mob was the culmination of a month of dance projects in the school which have seen the students in their classes and Houses, take the basic dance moves and plan and film their own routines. We’ve had students dancing on the school steps, to the entertainment of passers-by; students dancing at the airport on their choir trip; and teachers and primary students surprising secondary students by ‘flashmobbing’ them in the dining room at lunchtime. Students have danced in PE lessons to warm up, and in lessons as ‘brain gym’ breaks in Primary and Secondary. We’ve even used the dance to measure heart rate changes in Biology lessons! Dance has brought students together across the age ranges within our school, and it has been an exciting and fun way to begin 2018!

In both Primary and Secondary, students have used the Dance Challenge to get creative, work collaboratively and share their ideas. In both sections of the school, students have led activities, planned events, and organized the filming and editing (with 3 drone pilots in secondary doing a wonderful job of filming the whole school flash mob on Wednesday).  Not only has the Juilliard event brought us together to dance but it has given many of our students a chance to show leadership, develop their confidence and communication skills and step outside their comfort zones.

We look forward to sharing with your our own finalized videos as well as the Juilliard compilation of the Dance Challenge from across our family of schools.
