Internet Safety Workshop

08 March 2018

On Wednesday 28th February we welcomed Padraig Mac Mahon to BISB. Padraig is a Musician from Ireland and he came to perform his Music and deliver a very important message about Internet Safety to our students in Year 7-10.

In between listening to songs that Padraig has either written or performed as covers, he shared with the students' reasons why it is important to be safe online. Padraig, who has only just graduated from high school explained the need to keep your social media accounts private and who to talk to should you become worried about anything that you have seen online.

While, we all know that life has changed and is continuing to change very rapidly with the use of the internet at our finger tips, Padraig also talked to students about what a Digital Footprint is. This is a valuable lesson and it is something that everyone, not just our young people, should consider. Ensuring that you maintain a positive and clean digital footprint is not only the right thing to do, but it can have implications in the future, should it not be taken seriously.

The students were able to meet Padraig on stage if they wanted to and it was pleasing to see how many students asked him further questions about how to remain safe online.

Below are some quotes from some of our Year 8 and 9 students, summarising what they learnt and enjoyed about the workshop.

"I enjoyed the way he used his music to make us remember the important message. Also as him being close to our age it made his message very reliable. I will consider to make sure my friends and family are ok with me posting pictures with or of them. I didn’t learn anything new but I liked the way he made it relatable."

"I liked how he used music so we could remember it and how someone from around our age can relate and spread the message. I will consider not posting or being involved with anything that may affect my future negatively."

"What did I enjoy? His singing was very good and his speech. I enjoyed his concert the most because his voice was like a dream. I will consider not posting anything sexual, illegal or just not nice. I have learnt that when you take a picture it will stay in snapchat."

"I really liked the way how he presented the whole topic about internet bullying. It was like he was having a conversation with you personally. I will put my account on private and never post private/personal information on media. I have learnt that deleted stuff can be found by different companies and there is a chance of you not getting a job."

"I enjoyed the music and the talk about cyber bullying. Henceforth, I will be more aware about what I do on the internet. I learnt that the internet is much more dangerous and it is just like bullying face-to-face. I found out that despite all the good things on the internet, there are as many bad things as good things."

"I enjoyed the music and the message he is sending/spreading. I will think more before posting pictures on social media. I realized how a stupid post can affect your future."
