The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the programme and takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies.

CAS aims to develop students who are:

  • reflective thinkers—they understand their own strengths and limitations, identify goals and devise strategies for personal growth
  • willing to accept new challenges and new roles
  • aware of themselves as members of communities with responsibilities towards each other and the environment
  • active participants in sustained, collaborative projects
  • balanced—they enjoy and find significance in a range of activities involving intellectual, physical, creative and emotional experiences.


At BISB CAS is a wonderful opportunity for YOU to engage with the wider world and learn through experience. CAS is a chance for you to develop your awareness of important local and global issues, and make a difference to those issues. CAS allows you to help others whilst learning a little about yourself; who you are, what strengths do you have, what values and attitudes shape your interaction with world.

What is CAS

Creativity, Action, Service at BISB

  • Creativity is interpreted broadly to include a wide range of activities that involve creative thinking. Creativity provides students with the opportunity to explore their own sense of original thinking and expression.
  • Action is focused on getting involved in physical exertion that contributes to a healthy lifestyle. The aim of Action is to promote lifelong healthy habits related to physical well-being.
  • Service requires students to understand their capacity to make a meaningful contribution to their community and society. Through Service, students develop and apply personal and social skills in real-life situations involving decision-making, problem solving, initiative, responsibility, and accountability for their actions.

At BISB the CAS supervisor is Mr Evanswho is responsible for assisting students in implementing and developing their personal CAS programs. A good CAS program should be both challenging and enjoyable, a personal journey of self-discovery. Students are expected to be involved in CAS activities each week during the two years of the Diploma program and are encouraged to reflect on their CAS activities on a regular basis through Managebac.

CAS residential

To kick start the IB Diploma Programme all IB1 students head off to Ruzomberok , Slovakia for a one-week residential with teachers from the IB team. We spend time doing valuable community service work in a local schools and environmental service work in the national park. In addition there are introductory sessions to the Diploma Programme,  CAS, TOK along with a number of team-building activities.

Reflections from three of the group of our fantastic Year 12 students who made this year’s CAS trip such a success.

In the second week of school the Year 12 students went on their CAS residential trip to mark the start of their IB Diploma Programme. Our aim was to positively impact the local community and environment, and so the majority of our days were spent in schools, forests and various different locations helping out where we were needed. Even though we were informed of all the activities we will be expected to accomplish and warned about how demanding the week would be beforehand I don’t think any one of us were fully prepared for the week ahead of us, and just how challenging it would be.

However, as taxing as the week was it was also very rewarding, and I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a single person that would claim they did not enjoy it. We got to work with some local children, and learned how to step out of our comfort zones which was a bit of a challenge, but well worth it in the end. A lot of the activities focused on working with other children and I learned just how hard it is stand in front of a class and attempt to clearly get your ideas across without rambling. As a year group we had a chance to work on our teamwork, and the trip gave us a lot of valuable skills and a great start to the IBD programme.

My IB course began with CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) trip to Ruzomberok. I think it was a great start to my IB course also there were a lot of memorable things. On this CAS trip I have challenged myself because I have tried many things that I have never tried and I have improved many skills. As there were a lot of memorable things I think I'll just talk about the most remarkable ones.

Firstly I think the most memorable experience of this trip was teaching in primary school. I think it may be because of the children I met in the primary school, they were really nice and clever. Also I think teaching was actually a challenge because as we were swapping our classes and we have met children with different levels of English so depending on their level of English we had to change our teaching plan to let them enjoy our lesson more.The person who left the biggest impression on me was a boy at the school called Marek. He is a boy with ADHD (Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and I have heard his story from his teachers. He is an adopted boy and he didn’t have enough love when he was little. It was a quite sad story because he is just about 7 years old and he has experienced much more things which he was not supposed to. As we went away from the school he came and hugged me and this was really the most enjoyable moment of this trip.

There was one point during the trip when I felt proud of myself. It was when Miska, Lorenzo, Peter, Mr. Darwell and I were clearing the weeds around the castle in Ruzomberok. The footpath was covered with weeds and overgrown bushes and branches, so using shears and saws we cut back the vegetation to make the path useable for visitors. As we finished cleaning I turned around and saw what we had done I was so proud of myself.

Another great thing about the CAS trip was I spent a lot of time with my friends working together as a team, living together and helping each other. This trip made me and my friends closer to each other and know more about each other. From the trip I also got to know better the people who I don't know really well and it is a really good and quick way to make new students to join us.

I think when next year students will need some feedback from the trip I would say if you don't try your best you will regret it. If you would not participate in something you will regret it. If you don't try to challenge yourself you will regret it. If you don’t try new things you will regret it.

CAS trip is an essential part of the IBDP. When I found out that we are going to go on a trip, I was really looking forward to it. I was a new student, so I hardly knew anyone. CAS trip was an opportunity to know people in year 12 better.

The great adventure began on Monday, 8th of September. We helped teaching English at a local primary and secondary school. We translated some articles for a museum. We harvested guano and cleaned the surroundings of a castle. It sounds like hard work, and so was it. I think it was a really good opportunity to meet new people, and to enforce the relationships with friends I have made.
