David Keys

History Teacher & Head of TOK

Having graduated in History from the University of East Anglia in 1991, I went looking for adventure abroad as a teacher of English. These wanderings encompassed deepest Anatolia, the highlands of mid-Slovakia and the furnace heat of Saudi Arabia, at which point I returned to the UK to study for a PGCE History teaching qualification at the University of Exeter.

Though happy to have combined my love of teaching and of History at a school in Sunderland, UK, I still felt pangs of Wanderlust and so was delighted when the opportunity arose to return to Slovakia. So, this time with wife Sarah and children Tom and Madeleine, we joined the British International School in 2006.

In the spirit of life-long learning, I’m teaching myself to cook. Results have been mixed; richly flavoured casseroles have been followed by disastrous attempts at halusky and my pease pudding was described as ‘offensive’.

I gave up cross-country skiing after finishing last in the annual Biela Stopa race but continue to amble around the pitch in the staff/parents football team.

What the students say about me

“History is full of surprises and so are History lessons.”

“I like discussing History with students from other countries.”

“Mr Keys likes to remind us that he wrote the IB History textbook.”
