Rachael Howarth

Head of Whole School Visual and Performing Arts and Music Teacher

I began to read music and play recorder at age 5. In high school I took up the flute and began to perform with local orchestras quickly gaining my ABRSM exams in flute and musical theory.

I went on to study flute at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and later Huddersfield University, whilst in Cardiff I also took up choral singing performing with the BBC National Chorus of Wales.  During my summers I travelled to Vienna to work at an English Language summer school as head of the Music & Dance Department and it was there I discovered my love of teaching and travel.

I love teaching music and bringing new musical experiences to people.  In Mossley, my home town, I founded a symphony orchestra that regularly tours Europe and collaboratively wrote an opera for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.  I have founded many choirs and my youth a cappella group has spent the last two years performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  I am currently involved in the largest boys cambiata choir in the UK who performed alongside 'Joey' the War Horse in the 2014 proms.

I have been teaching music for 10 years now and am looking for a new challenge.  I am excited by how passionate everyone at BISB is about learning.
