For the second time in a row, Northbridge International School Cambodia students had the opportunity to participate in the world’s biggest and most rigorous MUN Conference: The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN), where MUN began its prominence.

On 27 to 31 January 2020, 13 Secondary students made their way to The Hague, Netherlands to battle their wits against more than 3,000 delegates from all over the world.

Speaking in front of a committee of 192 students in a hall is not an easy task. However, our students conquered their nerves and stood on the podium to speak for or against the resolution. All of them raised their points of information questioning the validity and the feasibility of the clauses.

If at the start of the conference their knees were quivering, not because of the chilly winter air but because they were a bundle of nerves, at the end of the conference was a complete 180-turn. All sang of pride and confidence, being able to contest other’s knowledge and prove theirs as well.

This delegate would like to express her gratefulness for such an awarding experience. One of the greatest thing from this trip was to meet all the people from around the world, and talking to them at conference, whether it's about the topic issues, or just general conversation about our personal lives, helped us learn alot about their different cultures and perspectives, It also helped many of us built more confidence especially in speaking.

Special thanks to Ms Nancy, Mr Nakwa and Mr Jeff for guiding us and taking care of us throughout this trip. And to whole group for making everyday more entertaining than we could've imagined. She absolutely loved how we could be so fascinated by the simplest thing we could find, such birds, water, bike... Just because they are from the NETHERLANDS.

With the fun aside, it was difficult to keep up with all the assignments and tasks. So this delegate apologizes once again to the teachers for not giving enough attention to the classwork and dozing off in class last week due to jetlag. She is working to make up for it.

But overall, we have no regrets. And we highly encourage all MUN members to participate in Thimun next year. And even if you are not currently in MUN, we recommend you to join as it does impact you academically and socially. Kelly

Apart from the serious business at The Hague, our students were blown away by Netherlands’ serene ambience and picturesque architecture.

In their tour of Amsterdam, Delft, and The Hague, the students could not help but stop to marvel at the country’s beauty. Their SD cards might have run out of memory as they tirelessly click the shutter whenever, wherever. To many of them, it was their first time and they claimed to be dreaming the moment they entered the country.

The best experience of it all, was meeting new faces and expanding their network of friends. Our students built relationships not only among their peers but also with students from almost every country in the world. Now, these students can claim how truly international they are.

Our students did not only participate in an international conference, but they became international students themselves. Their exposure to many cultures allowed them to observe global nuances and listen to diverse perspectives. This five-day conference is a testament of international mindedness.

My experience at THIMUN 2020 was amazing and is enough to convince me to go back next year if we get invited back. This was my second time going to the THIMUN however, it felt like it was my first time. I was in the Special Conference on Securing and Advancing Democracy Sub Committee 1.

Things were different this year. I was fully prepared to debate. Throughout the whole conference, I made many friends and actually made friends with my whole committee. Even though I felt prepared everyone around me made me feel like I could improve myself and get better at MUN. This was a great learning experience because of the other delegates who taught me and exposed me to some creative solutions to issues that the world faces.

Being in a committee situated in a small and cozy room made me realize that every delegate was the same as I was, which was a comforting feeling. I can say my experience in the Netherlands was significantly improved from last year as I was able to explore the city of Den Haag and Amsterdam, which allowed me to discover new places. Cham
