“Animal Rescuers” and “Going Places” have been fun and exciting units, providing children with the opportunity to develop a range of new knowledge, skills and attitudes.
So far during our “Going Places” unit we have looked at Mexico, India and people who live in desert regions, such as parts of Africa and Australia. We have inquired into different dance, music, food clothes, housing, flags and customs that each country or region has. Through studying this unit, children have developed positive attitudes towards other cultures and people that are different from their own. They have developed an interest and curiosity about the world around them along with extending on their ability to compose and ask creative and well thought out questions to extend their own learning.
“Animal Rescuers” unit involved a lot of planning, creating, questioning, thinking and team work. The children were particularly interested in learning about the effects of human behavior on animals, for example ocean pollution and forest degradation. They involved a lot of these concepts in their free play time, often using “Animal Rescue Aeroplanes” and fire engines to free animals from ocean rubbish or help them get free from a variety of other rescue scenarios that they came up with.
Helping to rescue rainbow lala who went missing.
Sending our class animals to India and Mexcio, we cant wait to see what they bring back.
This morning the children recieved a phone call from our class animal, Rainbow Lala. She is stuck in India becuase her aeroplane is broken and she needs our help to get back. The children were challenged with creating a device to help to bring Rainbow Lala from India to China. This involved them working in teams, using their logical and critical thinking skills, designing, constructing and trailing their ideas. We were so impressed with their cretiave thinking and amazing team work. We can see so much pregression and improvement in the above skills since the start of the year. We are going to test these ideas out soon and will let you know if Ranibow Lala and her friend arrive back safely.
Today we carried on our theme of helping our class animals get back from their holidays. Rainbow Lala came back from India after we made her a zipline, Nini Dragon came back from Mexico becuase we made her a parachute and our seal, Little White, is still in Antactica. Today we designed and made her some boats to try to bring her back. Children could choose to work together in groups or on their own. They selected their own materials and needed very little help from teachers. They all came up with great ideas and worked so well together. It is great to see them all being able to take on increasingly
