Last week, Léman was honoured to host the ACAMIS Cross-Country Championships. Ten schools from across China made the trip to Chengdu to compete in this great event. It was an extremely full and fun weekend for everyone involved.
Teams arrived Thursday and were brought to their hotel to get some rest before things kicked off on Friday. On Friday morning, teams were bused to the Léman campus where they marveled at our beautiful learning space. After getting settled in the gym, it was time for the Championships to begin!
First, we took teams on a walk-through of the course so they could see the lay of the land. Following that, we allowed time for teams to strategize with their coaches before starting a practice race. This gave teams the opportunity to try the course out and see the challenges presented by our hilly track. After lunch, we ran an exciting new part of the weekend with the Team Relay challenge. Schools made groups with one U14 boy, one U14 girl, one U19 boy and one U19 girl. We also mixed runners from different schools to make some extra teams which was a great display of sportsmanship and inclusivity. For a first-time race, the Team Relay competition was a great success, with teams from Nanjing and Macau taking the top honours. The final event for Friday was a Coaches’ race, which was also a first for the ACAMIS Championships. Spurred on by the vociferous cheering of their runners, the coaches battled through two laps of our difficult course to complete this fun race. Friday evening, the coaches were brought to a special dinner while Mr. McCabe and Ms. Dracz supervised runners having fun time in the gym at school with volleyball, basketball and badminton.
Saturday was the big day! After arriving at school, students had half an hour to mentally prepare before the actual races began. At 9 am, it was time for the U14 girls’ race. An amazing run gave our very own Nella Skoumalova 2nd place out of 25 runners. Next was the U14 boys, where Saadullah Muhammad improved on his CISA result to become the ACAMIS Champion! Unfortunately, we did not have any runners in the U19 age category this year, so we were unable to compete in the overall team championships, which were won by Nanjing and Dalian as ACAMIS Co-Champions.
An event like this one cannot be put on without a lot of invaluable contributions from a lot of people. Of course we must thank our coaches Mrs. Huskisson and Mr. Trowt for their dedicated work during the season. The entire PHE staff also put in many hours to ensure smooth operations and a great weekend for our guests. Beyond that, we have incredible contributions from Mr. Eric, Ms. Julia, Ms. Shirley, Mr. Zaur and their entire staffs for the invaluable work behind the scenes.
I’d also like to personally thank the LFA and Jeff Gale in particular for organizing parent volunteers to help us on Friday and Saturday.
The ACAMIS Cross-Country is a major event and a terrific showcase for our school. We are proud hosts and look forward to the opportunity to host once again next year!
