Duke of Edinburgh International Bronze Award Adventurous Jorney

Last weekend 22 students from grades 9 to 12 completed their Adventurous Journey in Pengzhou as part of their Duke of Edinburgh International Bronze Award.  The Duke of Edinburgh Programme otherwise known as the Youth Award Programme was founded in the UK in 1956 by Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. It has since spread to 144 countries and is recognised all over the world as a positive and dynamic programme focused on self-improvement strategies for young people.

The Award consists of four components – skills, physical development, voluntary service and the completion of an adventurous journey.  The aim of the programme is to encourage young people to develop resilience, initiative and above all to become a strong and supportive team players.

This is the first year that Leman students have been members of the Duke of Edinburgh community and we are very proud of their involvement and commitment to the programme.

Last weekend the 22 students hiked for two days, camping in a rural location between hikes.  The students had to plan their own hiking route using navigational skills; plan and cook their own meals; and carry all their own equipment.  The students completed training in first aid, compass skills and camp craft and were well equipped for their journey.  Their hike was muddy and the climb steep but all teams worked closely together to complete the objectives of the journey. A very well done to the students.

Having now completed their qualifying journey they will now focus on completing their other sections of the Award and we hope many will move up to the Silver Award in the new year.
