Dangers of Alchohol, Marijuana and Vaping

Reminder on the 4th of April at 19.00 (we needed to move it one hour) we have an important meeting here in school where we will discuss the dangers of alcohol, marijuana and vaping amongst our 8th graders. This is not a traditional presentation where you will be told all the things you already know or that are freely available on the web. Instead, we will be about confronting the realities of what is happening now with 8th graders and discussing what we can do as a community to reduce risks. The end product should be a set of agreements regarding correct supervision arrangements for parties and a clear declaration that we won’t turn a blind eye to alcohol use. This needs to be a community approach and is not “just” the responsibility of parents or school. We need to work together on this so please reserve the 4th of April at 19.00 to be at school for this collaboration.

Student Council and AASCA

Congratulations for our AMAZING student council who organised two pep rallies to send off our tennis players, swimmers and sports festival participants. They obviously had an impact as we won third place in two relays in the AASCA swimming tournament  with the prizes for most important CDS swimmers going to Ximena Menendez and Mariano Hernandez. At the tennis tournament we finished fourth overall with Juan Rodriguez winning a special prize for Sportsmanship and the most important player in the tournament! Congratulations to everyone involved and to Miss Montero and Miss Rodriguez for leading the groups.

Upcoming Trips

On March 28th a group of MUN students are leaving for New York to participate in our first international MUN conference in a few years. Huge congratulations to both Shawn McLaughlin and Gabriela Mercado for their hard work in organising such a wonderful opportunity in their first year at CDS! The event will take place in the official UN building in New York and we are pleased that we are able to participate in such a prestigious event.

Service Learning Supply Drive

MS Students were set the challenge of using Design Thinking to come up with community based projects at the beginning of the year. Two homerooms led my Miss Westphal and Miss Neuworth combined forces and have collected significant amount of supplies to donate to a local school. Next week we’ll have a full rundown of all students involved after the supplies have been donated. In the meantime here is a photograph of the students preparing the supplies.

Learning News

8th graders working on demonstrating different transverse and longitudinal waves waves in science.

We received a visit from a group of trainee teachers from the university of Iowa last week. They were a wonderful bunch and were so impressed with the amazing teaching, wonderful students and friendly atmosphere of our school. Below are some photos.

Advisory 7B welcomed visiting professors and teachers from Iowa into their Restorative Justice Circle.

Questions revolved around how it is to be an international student. Responses included both the benefits and hardships of moving around so often.

Life Science B presented their lab reports based on their plant experiments. Carmen Gomez and Gaby Lopez respond to questions from visiting pre-service teacher Casey Oztel (University of Iowa).

In Math 7A, groups presented data from their Probability Projec which included creating a non-biased representative sample based the statistics of one of the three populations: 7th grade students, Middle School students, students from the entire school.
