Unsung Hero – Anvar Kadirov Many of you will have seen Mr Anvar on campus. This distinguished gentleman was born in Tashkent in 1963, and his father was a Regional Director of Education and a Teacher. In his youth, Mr Anvar was interested in Chemistry. However, when his father’s colleague visited their home and tested him, he felt he was better at Mathematics. Hence, Mr Anvar undertook a Bachelor’s in Mathematics and Physics at the Tashkent Nizamiy Pedagogical Institute followed by a Teaching Diploma. He started his career as a Teacher at a new school that had opened up in Tashkent. However, after just 2 months he was called up for army duty in Vladivostok. 18 months later Mr Anvar gladly returned to Tashkent. He had realized how much he enjoyed teaching compared to being on the frontlines in the infantry. He spent four years teaching Mathematics, Physics and IT and was then promoted to Deputy Principal. At the same time, he met Ms Iroda, a Gynecologist, through family friends. They spent time getting to know each other and subsequently got married. This union blessed them with 3 children, Jamshid, Zebo and Guzal and later 6 grandchildren. Mr Anvar then joined TUIS as an Educational Organiser in 1995. Here he met his good friends Matthew and Caroline Shephard. This couple met each other in Uzbekistan and then decided to have an English-Uzbek wedding in Tashkent. At this wedding he was the groom's best man. Later they invited Mr Anvar to UK and took him sightseeing around Scotland, Wales and England. Mr Anvar was most impressed with the castles there but especially Old Trafford where Manchester United play. From 2004 to 2005 he worked at IREX (the International Research & Exchanges Board) as a Training Coordinator for the "Computers for Schools in Uzbekistan" project funded by USAID. Mr Anvar then started work at a Specialised School, Tashkent Islamic University in 2005, where he was later promoted to Deputy Principal. However, he missed working in an international context and was advised by a previous colleague to apply for a role at the British School of Tashkent. In 2011, Mr Anvar was interviewed by a fellow Football fan (Principal at BST) and joined BST. In 2014, the Uzbek School was opened at BST and Mr Anvar was promoted to Head of Department and then methodologist and has been an essential part of the Uzbek School since then. Mr Anvar is a huge football fan and always supported Pakhtakor and Manchester United. In his spare time he also enjoys travelling, playing chess, reading detective novels and horse riding. Of course, we must not forget the time he devotes to his adorable grandchildren and wife. We hope Mr Anvar will continue to be the bedrock of the Uzbek School for many years to come and keep inspiring future generations with his work ethic and resilience.
