Year 11 went above and beyond with their work in English A Language and Literature

Last week, our future English A Language and Literature students embarked on a week-long project exploring the role of propaganda in the modern world. 

At IB level, students are expected to analyse aspects of media and speak confidently and articulated about certain pieces of literature: two areas that are not assessed at GCSE level. In groups of 5, students planned a 20-minute speech analysing a Donald Trump speech, a Lyndon Johnson television advertisement and a Nigel Farage Brexit poster, looking at the historic background of the texts, as well as techniques used to influence the public. This was then followed by a debate about whether propaganda was a good or bad thing.

The students went above and beyond with their work, which was demonstrated in Friday’s presentations. They spoke confidently and passionately, revealing an incredible insight into all of the texts. We couldn’t have been prouder of them and we are very excited to see them thrive in this course next year!

Students have also been involved in a wide range of activities including a session in the auditorium where Years 12-13 shared their experiences of the IB and gave advice to Year 11 about how they can be successful in the programme. They have also been lucky to meet with Ms Fairbairn to learn more about the University applications progress and how to make good choices now to ensure they can achieve the higher education and careers pathway that they want. This is an ongoing programme with Ms Fairbairn that will run until the end of term. Students of Vietnamese and Korean literature started a programme of activities this week which will last until the end of term and all students continue to enjoy finance with Mr Graham and core PE classes.
