MIT Collaboration: An access to world-leading STEAM 'At the heart of their educational philosophy is a desire to develop learners who are curious, collaborative, creative and able to identify and solve complex problems. It is therefore incredibly exciting to share the news that Nord Anglia Education (NAE) has formed an innovative partnership with MIT to help shape our learners of the future', Chris Dawson (STEAM Co-ordinator and Science Teacher) shared about the MIT collaboration with NAE after his traning week at MIT.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is recognised as being one of the top universities in the world.  In recent years, it has topped the University Rankings leader board ahead of Harvard, Cambridge and Oxford.  Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the USA, MIT educates students in Science, Technology and other areas of scholarship with the mission of creating a better world. At the heart of their educational philosophy is a desire to develop learners who are curious, collaborative, creative and able to identify and solve complex problems. It is therefore incredibly exciting to share the news that Nord Anglia Education has formed an innovative partnership with MIT to help shape our learners of the future.

In June 2018, two teachers from our school, BVIS, attended a training week at MIT. Along with Mr. Barney from the Primary School, we collaborated with over 100 teachers from 50 different Nord Anglia schools in a week-long professional development course. We were fortunate enough to meet scientists and engineers who are at the forefront of ground-breaking research that has the potential to change the world. We discussed how we can bring this research, as well as the MIT philosophy, back into our schools in order to enhance the 21st century skills of our students.

As part of this collaboration, MIT has designed three challenges in which our students will be participating at various points of the year. The first of these will soon be tackled by students in Year 8 and Year 9 and is based on designing wearable technology to enhance human performance. In the Primary Section, students have been developing their creative skills through a hacking challenge.

Mr. Barney and I will be coordinating the implementation of MIT’s STEAM Programme (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Maths) at BVIS. We are very excited about this new partnership and look forward to sharing more about the progress of our students in the near future.
