The Student's Full Circle

The Student's Full Circle

A Community for Life

Teaching at Eton School for nearly 30 years has been an incredible privilege that has allowed me to witness the full cycle of academic life. I've taught students who develop their curiosity, grow up, find their path in life and, years later, come back to inspire students who are where they used to be. Seeing them come back is an incredibly emotional experience, because it shows that the bond with the school is not severed after graduation.

Stories that Make a Mark

A really special moment happened a few years ago, during our World Cup project. I invited a former student of mine, Luca, who is now a recruited trainee goalkeeper for professional soccer teams. He spoke passionately about the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment required to follow his dream. My students were captivated by his testimony.

Last year, during our bone project, one of my students suggested inviting his cousin, Diego, an Eton alumnus now training as a paramedic. Dressed in his uniform and equipped with his emergency pack, Diego gave a hands-on demonstration that gained him awe and respect in the classroom. For my students, this was a lesson in vocation and service.

Most recently, a colleague connected us with Nicole, an Eton alumna who is a marine biologist currently working in La Paz, Baja California. While visiting family in Mexico City, she graciously spoke to our students for our ocean project. She talked about conservation, research, and marine life. Her words sparked curiosity in the children and put a face to a professional field that they’d only seen in books.

When Alumni Talk, the Message Travels Farther

When a former student returns to the classroom, they bring a unique mix of closeness and admiration. Children listen to “one of them”—someone who was in their shoes, had the same questions, and is now living their dream. It is an impactful and motivating message that stays with them for years to come.

For me, as a teacher, each visit is a reminder of the impact that school has on a person. I recognize in my visitors the passion that they discovered once upon a time between these walls. I also see the love with which they come back to share what they have learned.

A Bond that Keeps on Growing

These bonds strengthen the Eton community: current students are inspired, alumni find a way to give back, and us teachers see how our work leaves a mark that goes beyond the school walls.

That is, to me, the student’s full circle.
