DANCE MAJOR

Dance at Summer Performing Arts with Juilliard provides a supportive and inspiring environment for students to study a wide range of styles and expand their understanding of dance. Daily technique classes develop a functional understanding of anatomy and hone spatial and sensory awareness. Students are encouraged to investigate their creative potential through an exploration of dance composition and improvisation. Performance opportunities develop confidence, and working in an ensemble cultivates community and a place of belonging. Through moving and sharing with faculty and peers from around the globe, students will explore dance as a means of self-expression, collaboration and self-development. Under the direction of Juilliard alumna Caroline Fermin, this program is designed for intermediate-advanced dancers seeking technical and and artistic growth.

Musical Theater Major

The Musical Theater program is a rigorous pre-professional intensive for talented singer-actors looking to take their craft to the next level. Our faculty brings deep and well-rounded industry experience and advanced training techniques to students, providing insight into the professional world of musical theater singing, acting, and dancing as well as the college audition process. Students participate in both group classes and private instruction to learn skills and techniques guided by principles for healthy training in vocal production, acting, and dance. The program emphasizes “process” over “product” so that students have the opportunity to build their own toolbox of techniques, all while working together toward a final performance directed by the faculty. In addition to final performances, students can share work of their choice at Open Stage Night, an informal, student-directed event that is an opportunity for artistic expression and community building. The Musical Theater program provides students with a supportive environment to take artistic risk, tangible techniques to buoy their learning process, ensemble building, and opportunities to shine individually in order to prepare them as theater practitioners at the professional level.

This program was so refreshing. Learning about how correct alignment can truly change my dancing was so meaningful and I also really enjoyed the ballet classes — they were different than a traditional one or one that I would take at my studio. I learned so much during these two weeks and gaining a better understanding on how versatile our bodies can be was incredibly worthwhile.
