International College Spain was the proud host of the TEDx Alcobendas conference on 1 February. Organised by alumni of the school, speakers including the Ambassador of Afghanistan, his Excellency Masood Khalili, presented around the theme Order and Chaos.

TED is a nonprofit organisation devoted to the philosophy of Ideas Worth Spreading. The programme began in 1984 as a conference bringing together the world’s thinkers and doers from three worlds: technology, entertainment and design. Speakers are challenged to give the talk of their lives in just 18 minutes. The TEDx programme was developed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at a local level.

Organised by the school’s alumni, the conference theme was ‘Order and Chaos’, and speakers linked their presentations to this in dynamic and thought provoking ways. The Ambassador of Afghanistan, his Excellency Masood Khalili’s, shard his experience in an Al Qaeda terrorist attack and Maria Abad, a young Scientific Researcher in stem cells, explained how chaos becomes order in her findings when recreating and generating cells to help the lives of others.

Other speakers included:

•    Carlos Llano (Ultraman/Ironman/Sportsman)
•    Alexandra Tapia (Author of the book El Susurro de la Luna)
•    Justo Algaba (Specialist tailor for Matadors)
•    Fuencisla Gozalo (Founder of the Fundación Cometa)
•    Helena López Casares (Presenter, Coach and Speaker)
•    Carlos Rebate (Director of Operations at Indra and author)
•    Jose Miguel Sánchez (Founder of Talent Profits, author of the book "Poderoso como un Niño")

The Ukele Clan Band and the improvisation theatre company “Jamming” provided entertainment while the finale was performed by the “The Scholars”, a group of International College Spain students and teachers. Ms Sarah Hodgson (Head of Expressive Arts) Mr Kjetil Hallre (Music Teacher) and three grade 10 students Toby, Kyle and Jacob amazed the audience with their rendition of the Jamie Cullum song “20 Something”.

His Excellency Ambassador Khalili, Maria Abad and Carlos Llano have agreed to come back to talk to students at ICS in the very near future.
