Creative writing contest develops students’ international awareness One of the advantages of Northbridge being part of the Nord Anglia family of schools is the opportunity it allows us to connect with students around the world. This year, through Global Campus, Nord Anglia Education is holding a worldwide creative writing contest to develop our students’ international awareness centered on the UNESCO Sustainable Development World Goal 4: Quality Education through shared learning experiences.

One of the advantages of Northbridge being part of the Nord Anglia family of schools is the opportunity it allows us to connect with students around the world. This year, through Global Campus, Nord Anglia Education is holding a worldwide creative writing contest to develop our students’ international awareness centered on the UNESCO Sustainable Development World Goal 4: Quality Education through shared learning experiences.

Nord Anglia students have been invited to write a short story or poem addressing the importance of quality education and the barriers to education that many children around the world face each day.

The Northbridge Grade 7 Language & Literature classes researched the importance of early childhood education, gender equality and inclusion, and the challenges children face around the world.

We also watched selections from the documentary Girl Rising, learning true stories of girls in Cambodia, Haiti, and Nepal. Each of these girls faced seemingly insurmountable odds and went on to overcome barriers to attending school.

Grade 7 students then wrote poems or short stories inspired by their research. These stories will be entered into the world-wide Nord Anglia competition, and be judged by author Deborah Ellis. The winner from each school will be published (last year’s winner, Jiu Yum, is pictured below with her published work!)

At Northbridge, we continue to seek real-world opportunities for our students to become globally minded, create solutions to the challenges in the world, and develop their compassion for those less fortunate.

After writing this story, it changed my mind about people who have not been educated or are homeless and living on the street with no parents or guardian.

There are many ways that we, Nord Anglia students, can help. There are people living on the street who have experienced things that we can’t imagine.

I hope we can help people in need and raise awareness for the local community so that everyone can have a chance to be educated and successful.
