BritCham Interview with Christopher Short Interim Principal

What attracted you to Northbridge and to taking on the role of Interim Principal in Cambodia?

Having served as a Principal and Head of School in the region for the past 14 years, I was already familiar with Northbridge's strong reputation. Its commitment to both academic excellence and inclusion closely aligns with my own educational values. I felt confident that Northbridge would be a community where I could make a meaningful contribution, while also enjoying the opportunity to support the school's continued growth and success during my time here.

What’s one thing you’ve discovered about Northbridge since arriving that has pleasantly surprised you?

Moving to Cambodia has been an absolute delight. When you're joining a school for a relatively short period, being able to settle in quickly is incredibly important. I've been genuinely touched by how welcoming and supportive everyone has been. The warmth of the Northbridge community has made me feel at home from day one.

If you could give every Northbridge student one piece of advice for making the most of their school years, what would it be?

Get involved and explore as many opportunities as you can. NISC offers an incredible range of subjects, activities, clubs and sports, and discovering what truly excites you can shape the course of your life. Whether it becomes a future career, a lifelong hobby or simply a passion that brings you joy, finding what inspires you is one of the greatest gifts of your school years.

What’s the most interesting place your career in education has taken you and what did you learn from the experience?

One of the most fascinating places my career has taken me was Ascension Island, where I served as Head of Two Boats School for 18 months. Ascension is a British Overseas Territory in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, covering just 96 square kilometres and home to around 1,000 people. Living and working in such a unique tropical environment taught me the importance of community, adaptability and making the most of the opportunities around you, no matter where you are in the world.

When you’re not being Principal, what might we find you doing and what’s something most people at Northbridge probably don’t know about you?

I'm a passionate scuba diver and have been a diving instructor for more than 30 years. As for a lesser-known fact, I finished fourth in the British Junior Triathlon Championships in 1985. Unfortunately, nobody remembers who came fourth in anything, but I'm still quite proud of it!
