Art in Paradise

Last week, Year 6 visited an art gallery called ‘Art in Paradise’ in order to get inspiration for our fantasy stories that we are writing as part of our new topic. We took our iPads with us so that we could take lots of pictures and share them with each other to help generate ideas for our story settings. Some of our Year 6 pupils have written some comments after visiting the gallery.

The Art in Paradise art gallery was a really amazing place to go and visit. If you had a chance to go with your Parents, you are extremely lucky. Remember to say a big thanks to them for volunteering to go along. You could get the app on your parents phone and all the pieces of art will start moving! I would recommend bringing your friend because it is a really cool place to spend your weekend. Thank you to everyone who volunteered.

The trip to the Art Gallery with my class opened my eyes to see a new world. I always knew how to take photos, but I never realised that taking photos could be so fun and interesting! As we went through the gallery, from the very first station where we took photos, I was completely mesmerised by the wonderful art. Throughout our whole visit, there wasn’t a single dull moment. I was constantly presented with astonishing art pieces and techniques on how to make our photos even more captivating.

Poppies

Year 6 will be selling poppies to the community over the next 2 weeks. This annual fundraising event for the Royal British Legion has always been well supported by our community. Poppies are on sale for 10 Baht each and the Y6 children will be bringing them around at break and lunchtimes.

Ecolotech Water - Learning about Science and sustainability

It was fantastic to welcome St Andrews Bangkok Alumni, Pavini Sethi, to school last week. Pavini is working with Ecolotech, a Bangkok based company which seeks to solve various environmental problems.

Taking a break from her studies at Berkeley in the states, Pavini came to talk about a new machine which generates water from the air around it. She gave a presentation to selected classes from years 4, 5 and 6 about a new machine, as well as our Eco Beasts.

The children learnt how the machine takes in the air around it and then condenses it to produce water, which is then filtered multiple times to make it safe to drink. Both condensation and filtration are key topics in primary science.

They also heard how the invention aims to tackle environmental problems. For example, providing drinking water in areas where the supply is polluted and reducing single-use plastic use bottles by allowing users to refill their own.

The children were very interested and asked some great questions. Pavini rounded her talk off with the chance to taste the very special “water made from air.” We’d like to thank Pavini for her time; it was great to see a familiar face so enthusiastic about building a more sustainable world.

Parents who would like to find out more about the machines can check out Ecolotech’s website here.

We are inspired by environmental initiatives and innovations like Ecolotech. Here at St Andrews we have many environmentally friendly initiatives. Most notably, the Eco Beasts which began at St Andrews and has been recognised globally. It was awarded the ‘2020 Best Environmental Initiative’ for its role in collective and sustainable change in the community. Students can address numerous environmental challenges directly with the support of environmentally sustainability coordinators. Without a doubt, The Eco Beasts have been inspired by Pavini and Ecolotech’s excellent invention. To learn more about the Eco Beasts click here.
