Talk for writing in Nursery

Talk for writing in Nursery - talk-for-writing-in-nursery
Talk for writing in Nursery Talking is the basis for all writing in the EYFS. Below are some of the talk for writing activities that the students in Nursery have been taking part in over the month.

Nursery A

For Nursery A’s first Talk for Writing, project we picked the favorite, “Brown Bear Brown Bear”, by Eric Carle. Our previous unit was about colours and our next unit is about animals so this book is a perfect combination of both units. After reading the book together a few times we listened to some songs that are based on the book. Together we made our own version of the story changing the colours and animals. After the first week we assessed to see where the individual children were. It was very reassuring to see that everyone could retell the basic story, some with more detail and expression, all with passion to continue learning the text of the book.

Nursery B

We have covered the book ‘Brown Bear Brown Bear what do you see by Bill Martin Jr. First we read the story and the children shared what they could remember from the story, we then looked at the different characters in the story, their colors what made them similar and different. Afterwards l printed the characters of the story and we put them in the correct sequence and the children each got to play a character from the book and say the words. To help the children remember the words and order we added actions for each character and used actions and words to retell the story. Once the children were familiar with the story we first created a new story together as a class starting the story with the brown bear and finishing it with children as per the original story. The children created their own story by drawing 4 of their own characters and retold their story in front of the class. The characters included princess, kangaroos, mountains, crocodile, spider, butterfly and Ultraman.
