Talk for writing in Reception Talking is the basis for all writing in the EYFS. Below are some of the talk for writing activities that the students in Reception have been taking part in over the month.

In talk for writing this term we have been looking at several books and a Nursery Rhyme. The stories we have looked at so far are 3 Billy’s Goats Gruff, The Zoo and Humpty Dumpty. Talk for writing is about helping the children to learn a story thoroughly so they can retell it in their own words and use it to create their own stories based on a similar theme to the story they have studied. They do this by learning the story with actions and words, drama, creative activities, then creating a class story map followed by their own story maps. These are all techniques help children to become story tellers and develop their own ideas by understanding the stories that have already been written and the different themes. While in Reception we only write some simple words or sentences down within this process. When the process is imbedded into the children’s understanding it will enable them to continue this process throughout primary school when they need to write their own creative stories.
