I grew up in a small village close to Johannesburg in “The Rainbow Nation – South Africa.” Having lived in such a rich multicultural environment, I have always had the desire to travel and experience more parts of the world and different cultures.
My teaching journey began in South Korea as an English teacher, where I lived for 2 years and taught a wide age range of children and even adults. After arriving in Nanjing in 2011, I have focused on teaching English as well as subjects like, Intercultural Communication, Social Sciences and Media. During this time I have taken on other senior roles such as, Director of studies and Homeroom teacher.
My enthusiasm and passion lies in teaching components such as writing using persuasion and argumentation, learning how to read and write different text types, understanding Rhetoric and how all these aspects apply to our daily lives. Therefore when I teach, I ensure that students are able to not only understand techniques and theories but are able to apply them to their world. As a teacher my greatest strengths lie in patience, communication skills and making content relevant to the many different personalities that our students have.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and children, travelling, swimming and reading. I am sometimes known as a human encyclopedia due to my love for researching possible answers to the many questions that pop up in my head all day!
In my classroom you will find relaxed students who aren’t afraid to express themselves. We learn through fun and exciting methods which encourage students to be themselves, be open minded and tolerant in their world views. Above all else, seeing students who are brave and flourish is the main reason that I became a teacher in the first place!
