Year 10 Chloe dived into an Ivy League education this summer with Columbia’s world-class instructors, and a dynamic online learning platform. Chloe received impressive Ivy League certification & prestigious praise! Read what her instructor had to say here:
"Chloe successfully completed a rigorous advanced creative writiing program as a member of the prestigious Ivy Leargue Columbia University's Summer HIgh School Program in Creative Writing. This course of study is modeled after the introductory creative writing workshop taken by Columbia undergraduates. The Introductory Creative Writing Workshop is an intensive programe during which students create original works of poetry, short prose, drame, fiction and nonfiction.
Each day of the programe Chloe, attended a 60 minute seminar with Sofia Florimbi, exploring the craft and techique of writing by reading published pieces, as well as two 90-minute classes, a craft class with Samuel Caprenter and a workshop with instructor, Megan Maguire Dahn. The craft class worked as a focus time to practice technical elements of creative writing. In the workshop, students ready and critiqued each other's work. In addition, Chlose had indivitual conferences with the instructors to get more in-depth feedback on her writing. Throughout the program, the emphasis is placed on the ability to give and receive constructive and insightful criticism, and on comprehensive discusions of the writing process. At the competition of the program, students must submit a portfolio of revised pieces for approval by the instructors.
Chloe is a writer of exceptional promise. Her work stands out as some of the best I have seen in all my years teaching in this program. What is so remarkable about it is that she is able to write under the influence of so many greats, across styles and time periods. Her short prose was inspired by Poe. Her poems were positively Sartrean. Her dramatic scene took the tone of a Cormac McCarthy western (though, happily, not the tone of a Cormac McCarthy play). She is deft with her language (a standout line is when she describes a car as "that cherry versatile") and inventive with her dramatic situations. I would not be surprised to see Chloe's work in all of the best literary journals in the coming years.
It was a pleasure to have Chloe in class this summer. She would be an undoubtedly valuable asset to any undergraduate creative writing program and I wish her the very best luck in her academic and astistic pursuits."
