In my spare time, I enjoy reading and anything creative. I am a member of several book clubs and am always looking for new recommendations. I love sharing my passion for reading with students too. At least once a week I try to get my sketch book out to keep those skills alive. I was previously an educational art fellow of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC so I love visiting the fabulous galleries and exhibitions here in Houston. Spinning has become a recent obsession as it is easy to be motivated by the fast-paced music but you cannot beat a stroll along the bayou into the city. A personal aspiration is to visit all 50 US states and I have managed 37 so far.
I have always seen education as the key to unlocking a future rich with potential, so knew from a young age that I wanted to be a teacher. After completing a primary teaching degree in Wales, I moved back home to London to be a teacher and a leader in a variety of diverse schools. Here I learnt what it really means to be a teacher and saw the importance of facilitating holistic learning experiences, which go beyond pure academics, to teach the skills and understanding vital to be a successful citizen of the world. After volunteering and teaching English in schools and orphanages in South America during my summer holidays, I became increasingly interested in international education. This eventually led to my decision to move to the British International School of Washington in DC. At BISW I honed my passion for curriculum development and applied my previous leadership experience to become the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) leader. I led my school through a highly successful accreditation and was headhunted by the IPC to join their team as an international education consultant and accreditor. My favourite part of my role as an accreditor is travelling to schools around the world to improve learning. This is my fourth year at BIS Houston. I have previously been a Class Teacher and Year Leader. I am delighted to continue to help our lovely school grow in my role as Assistant Head of Primary.
