Jordan Cooper

Jordan Cooper

Teacher of English, Exams Officer and Year 12 Form Tutor

I graduated from Plymouth University in 2004 with a B.A (Hons) in English, before completing my P.G.C.E at Roehampton University in 2007.

I started teaching at Rosebery School for Girls in Surrey in 2007, before being appointed Deputy Head of House in 2009 and Second in Department for English in 2010. After 4 successful years in these posts, I accepted the position of an English teacher at the British International School of Houston prior to becoming the Leader of Learning for the department in 2012. America was always a country that I had harboured a desire to work in and when I was informed of the calibre of the staff and students alike who I would be working with, my decision became an easy one.

As one might expect of an English teacher, I am an avid fan of all literature. However, I am also passionate about music, which is fantastic considering the variety of live music found in Houston. I also enjoy watching live sport and taking part in team sports like netball. Moving to such a big country like America also spurs my desire to travel to and explore the many states that exist here as well as travelling the incredibly large state of Texas. I am very lucky to have family in Austin, and further north in the Carolinas as well.

What the students say about me...

“Lessons are fun and we learn new things.”

“Your book suggestions helped me find the types of books I love”

“Friendly and kind, and you explain things well.”

This school is different to all others I have worked at because…

BISH is unlike any school I’ve experienced before. Its students are wonderful and truly enjoy learning; even when the pressure is on during exam season, they keep going with a smile on their faces. Their determination to succeed and desire to be challenged is what makes my job a delight and always different and exciting.

The ethos in school is also a calm one, apart from when House events like Sports Day occur; on such occasions, the lively and healthily competitive sides to our students appear. All students are incredibly polite, welcoming, and considerate too. I’m positive that not every teacher in the world can say that they are thanked for their lessons or have the door held open for them on a regular occurrence.

Teachers are also very keen to ensure that all students enjoy their learning and we take great care to nurture all ability levels. On occasion, staff will also provide break or lunch time study sessions in order to explain concepts further as our main aim is to see all of our students make good levels of progression during their time at BISH.
