Staff Profile: Denise Munro

Denise Munro

School Nurse

I qualified at Robert Gordon's University, Aberdeen and have been a UK Registered General Nurse for 30 years specializing in Burns, Orthopedics, Medicine and Surgery. My biggest achievement was being actively involved in the Piper Alpha Disaster and leading the Quality Assurance group for the Surgical Directorate at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.  I started a Self Help Group for people with facial disfigurement called “About Face” which is still active to this day. Other achievements include being responsible for setting up the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary “Tissue Viability Group” which ultimately increased awareness and significantly reduced the number of patients requiring invasive pressure sore reconstruction.

I also worked as a Research Nurse at Roche Pharmaceuticals. I have managed to maintain my Nurse Registration during my international travels by working as a school nurse, both in Switzerland and USA, which I thoroughly enjoyed.  I absolutely love working with the children and families of the British International School of Houston.

I am a Mum to 24 year old twins who are former BISH students and an 18 year old daughter in her final year at BISH. My son is in his final year of Medicine at Bristol University. His twin sister Graduated in Geography from Glasgow University in 2018 and is now accounts manager for a branding agency called D8 in Glasgow. I love entertaining, socializing and traveling, in between the most wonderful role of being a Mum. I also enjoy gardening, listening to music and skiing. I have had so many amazing experiences as a result of my family travels and I embrace every opportunity thrown at me. I believe the recipe for being happy is appreciating and liking what you have instead of what you don’t have and to be happy over the good fortune of others.

This school is different to all others I have worked at because...

BISH is a most unique and friendly setting for both students and staff. It offers fantastic teaching and support.  I really enjoy being part of the “BISH family” and believe it to be a very close, special, yet most professional environment to work in. It is an honor to be exposed and involved in such a global community/extended family.
