Hello from the College Counselor!
It is my pleasure to serve as the Director of University Counseling at the British International School of Washington. We have worked hard to build a dynamic, supportive, and personalized approach to college and career counseling at BISW. Our students are from all over the globe, and through our comprehensive and academically challenging curriculum, they have developed the skills required for success at top universities both here in the US and all over the world. Our students think broadly and globally and consider their university options with that same international-mindedness. It is exciting to get to know our amazing students. Advising and supporting students and their families through this next phase of their educational journey is truly a joy!
Director of University Counseling
At BISW, we view college and career readiness as part of the learning journey. The students are supported individually every step of the way throughout the process to help ensure acceptance into their best-fit universities. We provide guidance as students begin researching college options, exploring the selection criteria, and identifying factors that contribute to “best fit” universities. Through classroom presentations, workshops, and individual student and family meetings, all aspects of the search, application, and selection process are reviewed and supported with a combination of internal and external resources.
SAT/ACT Exam Preparation
Students are encouraged to prepare for and begin admissions testing (SAT/ACT) and review courses that are offered through our partnership with The Princeton Review.
College and University Application Preparation
Students and parents meet regularly with the college counselor who provides advice and guidance through each stage of the application process: Common Application for American colleges and Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) for UK universities. Additionally, universities from around the world visit our campus on a regular basis.
Over fifty college and university representatives from all over the world visit BISW annually during the fall recruitment season - students should take advantage of these individual and small group settings to learn more about admissions requirements and signature programs offered at each university.
BISW hosts several group evening information sessions: The Best of British, Explore England and Kings/Edinburgh information sessions, as examples- parents and students are welcome and encouraged to attend. We also publicize other information sessions offered at area schools through our relationship with the Washington Area Independent Schools Association (WAIS).
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is at the heart of all post-secondary college and career planning. The IB Coordinator and the University Counselor work as a team throughout the IB course selection process. As students learn more about their IB options, great care and consideration are taken in matching student’s career and university interests with the appropriate IB courses. Ensuring that country-specific and course/major requirements are intertwined with the student's overall academic strengths and interests is a critical component in designing a strong IB Diploma Program.
