Date Founded
Our school in Washington was founded in 1998.
Student Population
We have about 500 students equally split between primary and secondary school. We serve a wide range of families from Washington's diplomatic community, international organizations and businesses, as well as the local population.
Number of Nationalities
Our student body represents over 60 nationalities. Approximately 20% of our students are British, 25% are American and the rest of our students come from a wide variety of countries.
Age Ranges
We teach students from age 2 to 18. This covers US grades from Pre-K2 to 12th grade, and UK Early Years to Year 13.
Location
We are located in the heart of Washington's Georgetown neighborhood in a vertical urban campus with engaging learning environments across 5 levels of our school building. Our address is 2001 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington D.C. 20007.
School Day
The school day is 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. in primary school and 8:20 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in secondary school. Early drop-off is available from 8 a.m., afterschool care is available for primary students until 6 p.m. We also offer clubs and afterschool activities from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Curriculum
Students aged 2 to 5 years follow the UK Early Years Foundation Stage framework.
Students aged 5 to 11 years follow the English National Curriculum in Maths and English alongside the International Primary Curriculum.
Students aged 12 to 14 years follow the Secondary National Curriculum for England alongside the International Middle Years Curriculum.
Students aged 14 to 16 years follow the Cambridge International GCSE qualifications.
Students aged 16-18 years undertake the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.
Accreditations
The British International School of Washington is accredited by the Commission on International Education by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC-CIE), one of the U.S.'s six regional accrediting bodies.
We are also designated as an IB World School and accredited to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).
We are also accredited as a Centre for the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and we offer Cambridge examination courses in IGCSE.
Lastly, we hold accreditation in the International Primary Curriculum (IPC).
