Learning Beyond the Classroom: How PBIS Students Create Real-World Impact

At Prague British International School, learning goes far beyond textbooks. It becomes action, collaboration, and real-world experience. Events like World Environment Day are not standalone moments. They are part of a wider approach that connects education with purpose.

At PBIS, learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Through meaningful opportunities to lead, collaborate, and take action, our students develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make a positive difference in the world around them.

As part of Nord Anglia Education's Social Impact programme, PBIS students are encouraged to become active global citizens who understand that their actions can create lasting change. Through our collaboration with UNICEF, students engage with real-world issues and learn how they can contribute to building a more equitable and sustainable future.

Central to this work is the integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) throughout our curriculum and extracurricular activities. By exploring these global frameworks, students develop a deeper understanding of social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and human rights, while discovering practical ways to take action in their own communities.

Environmental stewardship is a key focus across all three PBIS campuses. Our dedicated Eco Councils have successfully achieved and retained the prestigious Green Flag Award, recognising the commitment of our students and staff to creating more sustainable school environments. Through environmental projects, awareness campaigns, and student-led initiatives, our young people learn that even small actions can have a meaningful impact.

Students also have opportunities to engage directly with global and local causes through our UNICEF Clubs in Key Stage 3 and Key Stages 4 and 5. These clubs provide a platform for students to deepen their understanding of international issues, advocate for children's rights, and organise activities that support UNICEF's mission.

Beyond the school gates, PBIS continues to strengthen partnerships with local charities and community organisations. These collaborations enable students to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences, developing empathy, leadership, and a sense of responsibility towards others.

Student voice is another cornerstone of our approach. Across the school, students are empowered to share their ideas, influence decision-making, and drive positive change. In our primary schools, Student Councils and Sustainability Teams provide opportunities for younger learners to develop leadership skills and contribute to school improvement initiatives.

For students eager to amplify their ideas even further, TEDx Youth events offer a powerful platform to share their passions, perspectives, and solutions with a wider audience. These experiences help students build confidence as communicators while demonstrating the value of young voices in shaping the future.

In senior school, students can further develop their leadership potential through participation in the Nord Anglia Education Summit. Working alongside peers from around the world, students explore global challenges, strengthen their leadership skills, and collaborate on innovative solutions designed to create positive impact within their communities.

At PBIS, we believe that education should empower young people not only to succeed academically but also to contribute meaningfully to society. Through social impact initiatives, sustainability projects, leadership opportunities, and community partnerships, our students are learning that they have the power to shape a better future and they are already putting that learning into action.
