When Does Boarding Start at SISD? What Grade 6 Parents Need to Know | SISD

SISD Boarding

Boarding at SISD starts in Grade 6, around the age of 10-11. That is the simple answer.

The harder question, and the one most parents are really asking, is whether 11 is the right age for their child, and whether SISD is the right place to begin. If you are considering a boarding school in Dubai for your Grade 5 or 6 child, whether you are new to SISD or already part of our primary community, this guide explains what boarding looks like in practice, what makes it distinctive, and how to tell if your child is ready.

When does boarding start at SISD?

Students can board at SISD from Grade 6 through to Grade 12, and families can choose from three boarding options.

Full boarding means living on campus throughout the semester and returning home for the holidays. Full boarders enjoy the complete evening and weekend programme, with time to relax, study and make the most of the campus.

Weekly boarding means joining the boarding house on Sunday evening and returning home on Friday afternoon. It suits families based elsewhere in the UAE: the school week is focused and commute-free, and weekends are spent together at home.

Flexi-boarding is available to students already enrolled at SISD, a week at a time and subject to space. It is useful when parents are travelling, during busy exam periods, or simply as a first taste of boarding life.

Families can find a breakdown of the costs and what is included on our boarding fees page. Our admissions team can also explain any additional requirements, including visa arrangements and medical insurance for international boarders.

Why Grade 6 is a good time to start

Grade 6 marks the beginning of secondary school at SISD, bringing new routines, academic expectations and opportunities to develop friendships. Because the whole year group is starting something new together, it is a natural point to begin boarding, with the boarding house offering a familiar base from day one.

It is also an age when many children are ready for a little more independence: looking after their own belongings, managing their time and making small decisions for themselves, with support close at hand. Boarding gives them room to do that within a structure that keeps them safe and settled.

For families already at SISD, the step is smaller still. Your child stays in a school they know, with familiar teachers and friends. What changes is how they live, not where they learn. For students joining SISD for the first time, the boarding community is a chance to form friendships beyond the classroom, supported by residential staff and older students who are already familiar with boarding life.

Life in the boarding house

Our purpose-built boarding houses are designed to feel like home. Students share comfortable en-suite twin rooms with their own study space, each floor has a stocked pantry for snacks and drinks, and boarding tutors live on site, so help is never far away.

The house system sits at the heart of boarding life. It creates a smaller community within the wider school: somewhere younger boarders feel they belong, with older students to look up to and staff who get to know them well. For an 11-year-old living away from home for the first time, that sense of belonging makes a real difference.

Evenings follow a steady, reassuring rhythm that rounds off a typical day at SISD. Boarders are welcomed back by the boarding team after school, sit down together for family-style dinners, and have supervised study time each weeknight with academic support on hand. Afterwards, there is time to unwind with friends in the common rooms, or to use the pool and gym.

Behind all of this is a dedicated pastoral team available 24/7, so you know someone is always looking out for your child.

Weekends, activities and community

There is a boarding activity on offer every evening, and for full boarders, weekends make the most of living in one of the world's most dynamic cities. Recent weekend trips have included Dubai's beaches and waterparks, desert safaris, hikes in the UAE's mountains and abra rides through Old Dubai. It is one of the real advantages of choosing a boarding school in Dubai: the region becomes part of your child's education.

Boarders also join a school community of more than 80 nationalities, so friendships cross cultures from the very first week.

Families are part of that community too. SISD supports parents through the Parent Portal and regular updates, so you can follow your child's progress wherever you are, and an active parent community makes it easy to connect with other families going through the same experience.

Swiss heritage and an IB education

SISD is Dubai's only IB boarding school. Grade 6 boarders enter the IB Middle Years Programme, which encourages them to become more confident in their learning while building the foundations for future study.

Languages are central to the experience. Students can follow bilingual pathways in English and French or English and German, or an English pathway with French or German language acquisition. For families planning towards the Swiss Matura, a dedicated pre-Matura pathway runs from Grades 6 to 8.

Our Swiss heritage influences the wider school experience, with an emphasis on academic quality, individual development and multilingual learning. Combined with the structure of boarding life, this gives Grade 6 students a supportive base as they move through their secondary education. For many families weighing up the best boarding school in the UAE, it is this combination of an IB education, Swiss heritage and a caring boarding community that makes the difference.

Is my child ready to start?

Not every child is ready to board at 11, and that is completely normal. Readiness has more to do with temperament than age, and you know your child best. A few questions can help:

• Do they cope well with routine and structure?

• Do they enjoy being part of a group, at clubs, camps or sleepovers?

• How do they manage a night or two away from home?

• Are they curious about doing more for themselves?

• How do they feel about boarding, and have they had the chance to share any concerns?

There is no single set of answers that determines whether a child is ready. Some children may be excited by the prospect of boarding but still need reassurance as they settle in. Others may initially feel uncertain, particularly if they have never spent much time away from home.

Talking openly with your child about their expectations and involving them in the decision can help you understand how they feel. Our boarding and admissions teams can also talk through your child's individual needs and what the transition might look like.

Weekly boarding lets your child settle into the routine while spending every weekend at home, and families already at SISD can try flexi-boarding for a week to see how it feels. The aim is to choose an arrangement that suits your child and helps them grow in confidence, with the right support in place.

Families considering boarding after the start of Grade 6 can contact us to discuss entry dates and availability.

The best way to decide is to see the boarding houses for yourself. Make an enquiry to book a tour, in person or virtually, and our admissions team will guide you through every step from there.
