The aim of our workshop for teachers on the INSET DAY was to get more support for our eco project and get their view on what should be the next steps towards an environmentally friendly school. The 4 members of the eco action group gathered to meet, to plan the presentation. At first we were not sure about the format and structure and we were not confident to lead the session, but with the support of our teachers we worked on the content as well as speaking skills and we became more confident as we practiced.
We decided to meet once during our holiday to make sure everything was in place and we were all prepared to present.
Monday February 24th was the day of the presentation. We first asked every teacher in the room to turn around and face the back wall and we read devastating environmental facts. We wanted to see how many people would turn around to face us. This was somewhat symbolic, because as the facts were being told the people turned around, as if they are not facing the problem. We wanted them to turn around themselves, eventually facing the facts not only during the workshop, but in their every day lives. Therefore, we wanted the teachers to reflect on the current situation at our school, make a short audit of their actions and suggest the further steps. We will present all outcomes of the workshop to the school management and follow up on them as much as we can.
Our whole workshop went extremely well. We did not make any significant errors and to our surprise, all the teachers were enthusiastic and were very supportive. Not only our speech, but our tasks went smoothly. We were all very pleased, as the teachers congratulated us and complimented us.
Preparing and running the workshop was a big challenge, but it was very worthy and valuable for us as we learnt a lot throughout the process. We believe it was worthy for the participants as well, as they could have their say and hopefully they will support our green initiatives at school even more.
