Mr Shkurka arrived at BISB in the summer of 2017 and has recently taken over leadership of the Maths and Computer Science Faculty, after his previous additional role as IB CAS Coordinator. Aside from teaching Maths across the Secondary School, Mr Shkurka also teaches the Theory of Knowledge course to the IB Diploma students.
After completing a Masters Degree in Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Newcastle (UK), he realised that his passion was for education and progressed into the teaching profession via a PGCE through Sunderland University (UK). His career to date has included teaching posts at international schools in Shanghai (China) and Jakarta (Indonesia) before moving nearly 4 years ago to Bratislava. Mr Shkurka loves the dynamic and varied nature of working every day in an international school setting and thrives on sharing his enjoyment for the beauty and applicability of Mathematics, a subject he views as essential to understanding the world around us. He is always eager to continue developing and evolving his professional capabilities, his pedagogical approaches and his knowledge of Mathematics.
A particular development focus at the moment is on how he can provide even more meaningful feedback to his students to enhance their progress, and on ensuring a greater clarity of subject comprehension for second-language learners. He also loves leveraging educational technology within the classroom for the benefit of all students. In his spare time Mr Shkurka enjoys spending time with his family, travelling and cooking. He is also a keen runner and triathlete, and regularly competes in races, the most memorable of which include adventure marathons on the Great Wall of China and Mount Bromo volcano in Indonesia, a 24-hour 150km sponsored run in Shanghai, and a recent half-Ironman distance triathlon here in Šamorín.
