Why choose Visual Arts IB in Year 12? We talked to Priya S, a Year 13 Visual Arts student, about her experiences during the Higher Level IB Visual Arts course. Here’s what she had to say.

As Year 11 students start to prepare for IGCSE coursework and exams, they will also be considering their options for study in Senior Studies (Year 12 and Year 13). We talked to Priya S, a Year 13 Visual Arts student, about her recent experiences during the Higher Level IB Visual Arts course. Here’s what she had to say.

Why did you choose IB Visual Arts?

I have always had a passion for art since I was young and IB Visual Arts is a self-directed course that has allowed me to express myself without having any limits which made it extremely interesting for me. I also took this course to help me prepare for my future goals and career as I aspire to study fashion marketing in university. Moreover, art is a subject that helps me relieve the stress from all the other IB subjects.

What is your favourite thing about doing IB Visual Arts?

My favourite thing about doing IB Visual Arts is that I am able to go at my own pace and this is one subject that has lots of freedom as you have no limits, your artworks are entirely up to you!

What has been the most challenging aspect of the course?

The most challenging aspect of IB Visual Arts is that it can be extremely time-consuming as you have to balance all your other school work with creating art pieces. However, if you really have a passion for art, you will enjoy creating the art pieces as it feels like you're taking a break instead of studying like the other IB subjects.

What is the best piece of art you have created so far during the course?

(Describe what the work is about and how you made it.)

One of the best pieces I created this year is string art which is characterized by an arrangement of coloured thread strung between points to form geometric patterns. To create these patterns I used a ruler, compass, protractor, pencil, and paper. I first sketched out patterns with symmetry. This is abstract, it's like an optical illusion that leaves the interpretation of the viewers very open and it also leaves the concept and the message you want to convey very openly for the viewer.

What advice would you give Year 11 students considering doing IB Visual Arts?

Overall, IB visual art is a really exciting course, and if you are interested in art, this is the course for you. It is a two-year programme designed for students who are self-motivated and passionate about art. Nothing is more enjoyable on this planet than doing what you love.
