From IGCSE to IBDP: understanding the curriculum connection

From IGCSE to IBDP - From IGCSE to IBDP

At St Andrews Bangkok, the transition from the IGCSE curriculum to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is carefully designed to be both coherent and enriching. This structured progression helps students build on their academic foundations while embracing new challenges and expanding their skills. Understanding how IGCSE subjects align with the IB Diploma Programme allows students and families to make informed decisions about their Senior Studies and prepare effectively for future academic success.

IGCSE Foundations and IB Subject Groups

The IGCSE programme at St Andrews offers a broad and balanced curriculum across languages, business, humanities, sciences, mathematics, and the arts. These disciplines closely correspond to the six subject groups of the IB Diploma Programme.

What is the difference between IB subjects offered at Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL)?

Most IB subjects are offered at Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). The difference between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) IB subjects lies in the depth and breadth of study, with HL courses covering more content and requiring greater time commitment, making them more suitable for students with a strong interest or plans related to that subject.

IB Subject Groups

Group 1: Language and Literature (also known as Language A)

For the IB, students study two languages, at least one of which is a native or near-native language, also known as Language A.

Most IGCSE students study First Language English, and some who are fluent in other languages may also study First Language French, Japanese, Korean, German, or Thai. The First Language IGCSE courses align with the IB's Group 1: Language and Literature (Language A), where students continue to study in a native or near-native language.

IB Options – Group 1:

  • English Language and Literature SL / HL

  • English Literature SL / HL

  • Thai Language and Literature SL / HL

  • French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean Literature SL / HL

Group 2: Language Acquisition

Most IGCSE students also study a second language (either another First Language, or a Foreign Language, such as French, Mandarin, Spanish, or Thai).

For the IB, students have similar options. They can continue their studies of an IGCSE First Language by taking a second Group 1 subject, or they could continue their studies of an IGCSE foreign language by choosing a Group 2 Language B option. Students also have the opportunity to start learning a brand new language as a beginner by selecting a Group 2 Language ab initio subject.

  • IB Options – Language B:Designed for students with previous experience, such as those coming from IGCSE.

    • English B HL

    • French B SL / HL

    • Mandarin B SL / HL

    • Spanish B SL / HL

  • IB Options – Language ab initio: This course is designed for beginners and is only available at the Standard Level (SL).

Group 3: Individuals and Societies

For students pursuing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, IGCSE subjects such as Business Studies, Economics, Geography, History, and BTEC Business provide a strong foundation. These subjects are particularly beneficial for the social sciences and humanities courses within Group 3 of the IB curriculum.

IB Options – Group 3:

  • Business Management SL / HL

  • Economics SL / HL

  • Geography SL / HL

  • Global Politics SL / HL

  • Language and Culture SL (interdisciplinary subject)

These subjects encourage critical thinking, cultural awareness, and an understanding of global perspectives.

Group 5: Mathematics

IGCSE Mathematics builds a strong conceptual base, preparing students for the analytical and applied approaches of IB Mathematics.

IB Options – Group 5:

  • Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL / HL is ideal for students who enjoy abstract reasoning and wish to pursue fields such as engineering, mathematics, or physical sciences.

  • Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL / HL focuses on real-world problem-solving and is suited for students interested in social sciences, natural sciences, or business.

Both courses challenge students to think critically, reason logically, and use technology effectively in problem-solving.

Group 6: The Arts

  • Visual Arts SL / HL

These courses encourage students to explore and refine their artistic voice through critical and practical engagement with their chosen medium.

A balanced curriculum for future-ready learners

The structure of the St Andrews Bangkok academic pathway ensures students develop a well-rounded profile through IGCSE and continue this breadth in the IB Diploma Programme. The IB requires students to select one subject from each of the six groups (with some flexibility to replace Group 6 with an additional subject from Groups 1–4), ensuring balance across disciplines.

This multidisciplinary approach fosters not only academic excellence but also the development of skills essential for university and beyond, such as critical thinking, independent research, and intercultural understanding.

Supporting student success every step of the way

To ensure a smooth and successful transition, St Andrews provides expert guidance through our Careers and Higher Education (CAHE) team to help students choose IB subjects that align with their interests, strengths, and career aspirations. Whether pursuing a path in sciences, humanities, business, the arts, or languages, students receive personalised support throughout their journey.

By clearly understanding the links between IGCSE and the IB Diploma, students and families can confidently navigate the Senior Studies years with purpose and clarity.
