St Andrews Music Programme empowers students to compose original soundtracks

Year 6 students at St Andrews took part in an inspiring international collaboration this term. Working with peers in Australia and Scotland as part of our Young Producers pathway within the St Andrews Instrument Programme, they first created films that captured each country's landscapes. They then composed original soundtracks to accompany the footage, blending creativity with technical skill.

The Young Producers pathway

For students drawn to the broader world of music, St Andrews offers an option that runs alongside our Year 5-9 classroom instrumental programme called Young Producers. Delivered through music technology, this pathway appeals to children with a keen interest in studio work, sound engineering, and digital music production. It broadens their understanding of music beyond traditional instruments and gives them the chance to explore creative possibilities in editing, composing, and producing.

As part of this exciting international project, students not only created films but also experimented with creating and mixing samples of music to compose soundtracks for videos created from footage shared by students from each of the three countries, deepening their understanding of how music can reflect place and atmosphere.

Capturing Bangkok’s unique setting

Taking inspiration from our school’s unique setting, students recorded footage of the leafy playground, the characterful khlongs, and views of the approach to our campus, offering a strong sense of our vibrant city location. These scenes provided a striking contrast to the sprawling forests of Melbourne, Australia, and the rugged island landscapes of Orkney, Scotland.

Together, the footage created colourful montages that celebrated nature around the world, highlighting both the diversity and beauty of each location.

Developing music editing skills

Throughout the academic year, students have developed strong music-editing and production skills. This project allowed them to apply those skills in a real‑world context. They made thoughtful, creative decisions about how to pair music with video, producing soundtracks that reflected the atmosphere and identity of each landscape across all three countries.

Sharing experiences with global partners

The collaboration was more than a creative exercise. It allowed students to connect with other young musicians internationally, share insights into life in Bangkok, and learn about different cultures. Mr Benjamin, Primary School Music Teacher, reflects, “Our students are excited about working with other young musicians from around the world, and proud to share an insight into what their lives in Bangkok look and sound like, while also experiencing their peers’ interpretations from Australia and Scotland.”
