William Hakim - Viola
William Hakim, violist, praised for his "warmth of tone and musicality" (Leipziger Volkszeitung), enjoys performing, composing, arranging music in a variety of genres. Will has performed throughout Japan as principal and soloist with the New York Symphonic Ensemble. He is a member of the Iris Orchestra in Memphis, Ensemble LPR, Pegasus Chamber Orchestra, Hyperion String Quartet, and also performs with the New York City Ballet, New Jersey Symphony, the Princeton Symphony, Lenape Chamber Ensemble, Perspectives Ensemble, and on Broadway musicals such as The Lion King. In a jazz setting he's played with Branford Marsalis, Gene Bertoncini, and with members of the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He was Billy Joel’s violist for his Madison Square Garden residency, toured with Josh Groban, Branford Marsalis, Johnny Mathis, The Who, and Rostam Batmanglij among others, appeared on shows such as the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Good Morning America, the Today Show, and has recorded oundtracks of several films and for Naxos, Decca, and Albany records. Recent arrangements include traditional world music for United Nations award ceremonies. He studied with John Graham at Eastman, with Samuel Rhodes at the Juilliard School, where he received his M.M., and with Paul Neubauer at the CUNY Graduate Center, where he is a Doctoral candidate researching improvisation studies. Mr. Hakim has been on the faculty at Brevard Music Center, Seton Hall University, and Skidmore College.
