Musical Theater Experience
The core class of the Musical Theater Experience (MTE) intensive: A daily two-hour exploration of singing-acting in musical theatre. The first hour will include physical warm ups, acting exercises, across the floor dance combinations, and discussions on musical theatre topics. The second hour will be dedicated to putting these skills to practical use by staging songs and scenes from the musical theatre repertoire for the programme’s final concert.
Musical Theatre Style/Audition
For students in the MTE intensive only: An informal master class dedicated to musical theatre style and how to give a successful musical theatre audition. Topics included will be the differences between classical and contemporary/commercial vocal techniques, audition expectations for musical theatre, how to choose the most successful audition song for you, finding your 8, 16, and 32 bar cuts of audition songs, and much more!
Morning Movement & Dance Class
For students in the MTE intensive only: Learn how to warm up your body like a professional performing artist: including strengthening and stretching exercises, as well as fundamentals of dance movement with combinations at center and across the floor. Students will also be introduced to different styles of partner social dancing, such as Tango, Waltz, Swing, etc.
For students in both programmes: Small groups (7-10 students) are assigned to one voice teacher for the duration of the intensive. Several times during the week, the teacher will meet outside of private lesson times with the whole group in an informal master class setting. This offers an opportunity for students to observe their peers in the learning process, which reinforces key concepts, and provides students with a chance to ask questions and learn from their colleagues.
Alexander Group Class
For students in both programmes: Learn how to let the right thing do itself. Learning through conscious awareness about how we think about our singing and what we are doing with our thoughts and bodies, both unconscious and conscious, to compromise healthy coordination needed for artistry, efficiency, ease, poise, and freedom. Alexander Technique learning involves techniques to stop the habitual patterns that keep us from making change, while calming the nervous system so that it is in the best state of learning and performing. Some techniques include Constructive Rest and Inhibition (not doing your habit) and learning about how the relationship of our head to our neck and back is primary for full functioning.
Daily Town Hall Sessions:
These unique sessions are led by our expert faculty and offer invaluable insight into the professional world of vocal arts. Sessions will focus on special topics that are prevalent to the development of young singers, such as:
