Your GCSE Questions Answered: Advice from BIS Abu Dhabi Students and Staff

Your GCSE Questions Answered: Advice from BIS Abu Dhabi Students and Staff - Your GCSE Questions Answered Advice from BIS Abu Dhabi Students and Staff

GCSEs are an important milestone, and preparing for them can bring plenty of questions. When should you start revising? What techniques work best? How can you tell if you are making progress?

Following this year’s GCSE results, we asked some of our top-performing students and staff to share their advice and insights. We're also resharing our BIS Abu Dhabi Revision Guide, which brings together some of the most effective revision strategies and study tips contributed by students and staff over the years.

1. When should I start revising?

Start early and stay consistent.

You don't need to spend hours revising from the beginning. Instead, build good habits throughout Years 10 and 11, regularly review what you have learned and gradually increase your revision as exams approach.

Starting early also gives you time to identify areas you find challenging and work on them without the pressure of last-minute cramming.

2.What makes revision effective?

Don't just read your notes, actively test what you know.

Try flashcards, self-testing, practice questions, past papers and making your own notes. The most effective approach will be different for everyone, so experiment with different techniques and find what helps you remember and understand information.

Mock exams and practice papers are also valuable. They help you become familiar with exam questions, practise managing your time and identify areas where you can improve.

3. What should I do when I make mistakes?

Use them as a guide.

Teacher feedback, mock exams and practice questions can show you exactly where you need to focus. Instead of simply correcting an answer and moving on, take the time to understand why you made the mistake and what you can do differently next time.

If you are unsure about something, ask your teacher for help. Getting support early can make a big difference.

4.How can I balance revision with everything else?

Make your revision sustainable.

A good revision routine should leave time for sleep, exercise, family, friends and activities you enjoy. Taking regular breaks and looking after your wellbeing can help you stay focused and motivated throughout the exam period.

Lessons from our GCSE top performers

This year's GCSE results gave us plenty to celebrate. We spoke to five of our top-performing students about what helped them prepare for their exams.

While each student had their own approach, several common habits stood out.

Adithya achieved eight Grade 9s and one Grade 8, and credits starting early, staying consistent and learning from mistakes.

Imad achieved eight Grade 9s and two Grade 8s, focusing on understanding the content first before applying his knowledge through exam-style questions.

Nael achieved nine Grade 9s and one Grade 8, using flashcards, his own notes and regular mock papers, while making time for sport and relaxation.

Yosef, who achieved eight Grade 9s, focused on regular preparation and developing both his subject knowledge and exam technique.

Rytal achieved five Grade 9s and four Grade 8s, using a revision timetable, manageable goals and mock exams to identify gaps in her knowledge.

Although their revision techniques varied, a common message emerges from their advice: start early, stay consistent, practise regularly, take time to rest and recharge, and learn from your mistakes.

Advice from our Head of Year 11

Our Head of Year 11 Mr. Stanier supports current Year 11 students throughout their GCSE journey and shares what can make the biggest difference to students preparing for their exams.

"Success in Year 11 comes from consistency. Work hard, use your time wisely, ask for support when you need it, and aim to improve every day. Small, positive habits now can make a huge difference when the exams arrive."
