Community Services – School on the Boat

At the British International School in Hanoi we care about people.  As part of our community services programme our Year 7 students organised a number of games and sporting activities and invited children that are supported by the organisation ‘School on the Boat’.

School on the Boat are working with families who migrated from the Vietnamese countryside towards Hanoi to earn a living from irregular activities such as selling drinks on Long Bien Bridge or gathering recyclable waste.  It is important to support the children and families to provide an education and to enroll them in public schools, providing materials and social help.

All the children had a wonderful time playing basketball and badminton.  They also played athletics and the Year 7 students had planned what could best be described as a mini decathlon which included, jumping events both long and triple, a foam javelin throw along with running events on both the short and long tracks.

Our younger visitors also enjoyed the fun games like the relay race and obstacle course;

However the favourite by far was the ever popular parachute games.

After a very eventful and action packed morning we were joined by the community and charity club who accompanied our visitors to a very well earned lunch in the primary canteen.

As a way of saying thank you to the children for taking the time during teacher’s day to visit BIS; it was nice to present gifts which included warm clothing, rucksacks and stationary to the volunteers from School on the Boat, for them to distribute to the children and families they are supporting.

Thank you to all the students who helped make this visit an enjoyable one for our guests.
