Dear Parents,
Creativity, defined as being the process of having original ideas that have value by Ken Robinson (British author and creativity expert), is highly valued at BIS.
Although creativity can span every subject within our curriculum, this month we have had a whole school focus on Art as BIS took part in the annual Big Draw. The Big Draw aims to get everyone drawing. When we draw, language barriers disappear; we have the chance to slow down, and to appreciate how the visual world works. A drawing can often communicate an idea more effectively than words and is a skill which is needed in so many areas of education and in different occupations.
In the primary and secondary assemblies today Richard Harrison, our Art Leader, shared some of our students’ accomplishments as well as staging some exciting live creative art sessions. If you enter our school foyer, through the main entrance, you will see a display of the Year 9 art project. They have been learning about phenakistoscope, the first widespread animation device that created a fluent illusion. Students demonstrated that when the cardboard discs, displayed on the display board, are spun quickly and viewed through a mirror, a rapid succession of pictures can be seen giving the impression of a moving image.
Primary classes have also created impressive whole class pieces of artwork. Canvasses, which will be displayed for all to admire, will be auctioned during our International Fair on Saturday November 18th. The proceeds will help our community projects which our students are working on as part of the Nord Anglia initiative in Tanzania. Further details will follow; I’m sure the canvasses will be highly sought after so don’t miss your opportunity to own one of these originals!
BBGV Fun Run
We now have over 370 members of our BIS community who have signed up to participate in the annual BBGV Fun Run. I am looking forward to seeing a sea of BIS Union Jack t-shirts and taking part in the event on Sunday at Eco Park. Don’t forget to wear your race number and look out for the BIS stand where we will gather before taking a team photo.
